The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the largest higher education institution in the Eastern and Southern Cape, with some 20 000 students enrolled. Approximately 10% of these students are international students.

The NMMU offers quality education in a vibrant, diverse environment conducive to excellence and innovation.

The NMMU has six different campuses of which five are located in the Nelson Mandela Metropole and one in George. The North and South Campuses are located on a nature reserve on the coastal parts of the city.

The NMMU is rooted in a country where the First and Developing Worlds converge. At this crossroads, new knowledge, innovation and relevant research merge to illuminate the path to sustainable development for Africa.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University firmly subscribes to the philosophy of a connected University. Through its international endeavours we have connected ourselves to a network of universities, donor agencies, multi-national companies that makes us a truly international university. Our connectedness to this international network makes us a special place to study. We provide a connectedness to the diversity of the local cultures with an international flavour. Not only are we creating a link between the local and the international on the campus but we enrich the cultural diversity of the city.

As a New Generation University we also connect the different forms of knowledge creation. Our research activities are bringing together fundamental and applied research connecting our knowledge production to the world outside the University. Our curricula focuses on providing professional education that connects the curricula with world of work.

We are also uniquely connected with the environment by being on a nature reserve where you can feel, see and experience Africa and its diversity on our campus. What makes this experience so special is that you can also experience more than 30 different cultures from Africa on our campus what makes us truly an African University connected to its roots.

NMMU is the biggest tertiary institution in the Eastern Cape Province, with some 20 000 students enrolled on seven different campuses – five in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) and two in the beautiful city of George.

NMMU North Campus - The campus is home to a state - of - the art Conference Centre,an Astroturf Hockey facility and a convenient selection of villages and residences.

NMMU 2nd Avenue Campus -Situated approximately 5kms from the Main Campus, 2nd Avenue is ideally placed across from PE’s premier tourist attractions.

NMMU Missionvale Campus - is located about 25km from the main campus and accommodates some 2000 students.

NMMU South Campus - Offering 830 hectares of protected fauna & flora, this campus gives new meaning to student life and a real cultural experience.
